The University of 51С»Æ³µ offers University-wide centers that build on existing strengths of the institution in interprofessional education, marine science, neuroscience, public health, global humanities, and biomedical research.
The Centers are designed to provide opportunities for collaborative research and scholarship programs that are competitive for interdisciplinary, multi-investigator, and multi-institutional awards. The Centers are also designed to expand undergraduate research at 51С»Æ³µand explore opportunities for future Ph.D. programs. Below are brief descriptions of each Center. Arthur P. Girard Marine Science Center
The University of 51С»Æ³µâ€™s campus in Biddeford, Maine — at the meeting point of the Saco River and the Atlantic Ocean — is a confluence of natural resources that over the years has attracted and inspired students and faculty with an interest in the natural environment. The University has taken advantage of its unique location with the construction of the Arthur P. Girard Marine Science Center, which provides state-of-the-art facilities for marine education and research, three research vessels and our own Ram Island for student field work.
Center to Advance Interprofessional Education and Practice
The Center to Advance Interprofessional Education and Practice (CAIEP, formerly the Center for Excellence in Collaborative Education) brings together vibrant and innovative University-wide resources to create educational programming responsive to the evolving needs of the 21st century collaborative health care workforce. CAIEP initiatives are multi-level and intended to influence the culture of health education and health care practice across domains.
Center for Excellence in the Neurosciences
The mission of the Center for Excellence in the Neurosciences is to foster creativity and collaboration among people who have a passion for understanding the complexities of the nervous system and applying this knowledge to improve human health, productivity, and quality of life. By fostering research and education collaborations across a broad variety of disciplines, the Center for Excellence in the Neurosciences endeavors to make innovative discoveries in the neurosciences. This approach offers unique training opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students that have shared interests in the field.
Center for Global Humanities
The Center for Global Humanities is a public forum dedicated to the study of human destiny in the 21st century. As new discoveries in science and technology are changing our understanding of human nature and raising burning questions about our future, the Center uses the lenses of the humanities to provide insight into this emerging human condition.
Center for Pain Research
The Center for Pain Research (COBRE) was established in 2012 through funding from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS). The Center’s mission is to significantly contribute to the scientific understanding of the neurobiology of chronic pain, facilitating the discovery and development of novel therapies. The primary focus of the Center is to provide support to several junior scientists as they establish independent, extramurally funded research programs.
