UNE鈥檚 Spring Student Art Show features still life and abstract still life painting
The University of 51小黄车鈥檚 Spring Student Art Show is on display at the university鈥檚 Biddeford Campus Center until May 1. This year鈥檚 exhibit features student works from an introductory painting class taught by Sarah Gorham, M.F.A., M.A.T. Both still lifes and abstract still lifes will be featured.
According to Gorham, throughout the semester, the students learned the basic principles of composition and design, focusing on depicting light and shadow to create an illusion of volume and weight. For the still life assignment, students chose one object and situated it in space, thinking of the 鈥渞ule of thirds鈥 to balance the composition. Those students who opted to paint an abstract still life were inspired by Matisse鈥檚 鈥淗armony in Red鈥 and looked at the work of contemporary painter Kahinde Wiley, whose paintings use pattern and design as background elements.
Students who have work mounted in the exhibition include the following: Avery Backus, Abby Carney, Mariah Chase, Lindsey Droun, Phuong Lu, Madison Lux, Arianna Paul, Trina Sayed, Allison White, Michael Wilkes, Mark Stubbs, Jake Gagne, Seth Masciangelo, Tess Lawlor, Melissa Stein, Erin Shores, Brogan Hurst, Nolan Laakso, Gabby Swisher, Megan Thomas, Cory Johnson, Natalie Buscemi, Emily Rottino, Olivia Pol, Gabby Swisher, Jason Harmon, Olivia Scott and Alissa Krusezenski.
The exhibit is free and open to the public. UNE鈥檚 Campus Center is located at 11 Hills Beach Road, Biddeford, Maine. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information, contact Diane Noble by email or phone (207-284-6394).
