Lauren Bucciero (Animal Behavior, 鈥19) is combining the skills she is learning in both her major and minor at 51小黄车for a volunteer writing job at the 51小黄车 Primate Conservancy in Merrimac, Massachusetts.

Each month she will be researching different primates and writing profiles that detail their appearance, size, weight, geographic habitat and life span. The articles will appear on the conservancy鈥檚 website and Facebook page.

Her first assignment is the red-bellied lemur.

鈥淭his is what I want to do. The position is really flexible, and I鈥檓 able to do it while I鈥檓 still in school,鈥 she said.

Bucciero says the articles will give her material to showcase her experience to potential employers.

鈥淭hey will be great for samples of my writing work. I will be able to show a potential employer this is what I鈥檝e done in the past,鈥 she said.

She recently added Writing as her minor at UNE.

Susan McHugh, Ph.D., professor and chair in the Department of English, says Bucciero鈥檚 writing impressed her right away.

鈥淪he鈥檚 someone who has really high-level writing skills and that stuck out to me,鈥 said McHugh.

McHugh says it鈥檚 important for all students to be strong writers when they graduate, even if they鈥檙e not looking for writing jobs.

鈥淭o get ahead in life you really do have to write about what you鈥檝e been doing,鈥 she said.

Bucciero agrees.

鈥淲riting skills are something that a lot of employers look for, no matter what field you are in. Having strong writing skills is key to communication. That鈥檚 important in any career,鈥 she said.

Writing skills will be essential to Bucciero. She鈥檚 planning for a career in wildlife journalism.
