Naloxone training of 51小黄车students highlighted in 'Forecaster' article
UNE鈥檚 Kenneth McCall, associate professor and residency director at the College of Pharmacy, was quoted in a recent article in the Forecaster about Maine pharmacists prescribing the overdose-reversing drug naloxone.
New state rules allowing pharmacists to prescribe naloxone, sold under the name Narcan, are expected to be finalized soon. Under the rule changes, pharmacists would be able to prescribe naloxone after taking two hours of training.
In the article McCall said that training already exists at the University of 51小黄车 and by next month the University will also offer online training as part of a continuing education program for pharmacists in Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire.
McCall said pharmacists writing prescriptions is not uncommon. They already write them for flu vaccinations.
