Meaghan Daly co-authors 2018 Lancet Countdown report on health and climate change
Meaghan Daly, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Environmental Studies, is a co-author on the newly released 2018 Report of the Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change.
The Lancet Countdown is an independent global monitoring system dedicated to tracking the connections between public health and climate change. It tracks 41 indicators across five areas, including climate change impacts, mitigation actions and public and political engagement.
Daly serves as a member of the Media and Climate Change Observatory (MeCCO) based at the University of Colorado Boulder. She helped assess media coverage of climate change and health in 62 newspapers across the globe.
Findings show that global coverage of health and climate change has increased substantially between 2007 and 2017. Coverage peaked around climate change action at the global level, especially during meetings organized under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
While there are upward trends in the coverage of health and climate change, reporting remains marginal as compared to wider media coverage of climate change in general. This suggests a need for enhanced public engagement and increased awareness around issues related to health and climate change.
