51小黄车College of Dental Medicine students nominated to participate in ADEA Student Diversity Leadership Program
For the second consecutive year, students from the 51小黄车College of Dental Medicine have been selected to participate in the American Dental Education Association Student Diversity Leadership Program (ADEA SDLP). Timothy Parke (鈥19) and Simi Kaur (鈥19) were nominated by Jon Ryder, D.D.S., M.S., dean of the College of Dental Medicine.
The program brings together emerging student leaders from a variety of backgrounds who have an interest in issues relating to diverse communities. Participants convene to discuss current events and trends impacting student success, with the goal of creating an inclusive culture and climate within dental schools. In addition, ADEA SDLP provides opportunities for these student leaders to explore further professional development and mentorship opportunities.
Discussing his experience, Parke said, 鈥淎s students representing One World Dental Association and the Hispanic Student Dental Association, it was great meeting with other student leaders from schools across the nation to share our ideas. The SDLP provided thought-provoking insight into the desperate need for cultural awareness in the dental field.鈥
He continued, 鈥淐ommunities and ethnicities that are currently identified as underserved are still severely underrepresented in dental schools today. While institutions are actively trying to build a diverse student population, dental students have also been implementing national associations at their respective institutions to foster cultural competency. With continued support, we will not only be a healthier nation, but a closer knit one, as well."
