51С»Æ³µChemistry Club receives two American Chemical Society awards

The University of 51С»Æ³µ Chemistry Club, a student chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS), was recently recognized by the ACS Society Committee on Education Student Chapters Awards program for the 2016-17 academic year.

The 51С»Æ³µchapter earned the top tier Outstanding award, one of only 53 nationwide, and the Green Chemistry Award from the ACS Green Chemistry Institute, one of only 56 nationwide. Both awards were the only ones of their kind given to a chapter in northern 51С»Æ³µ. Furthermore, the 51С»Æ³µchapter was one of only 27 chapters in the country to receive both awards.

The awardees are selected based on the chapters’ activities and leadership in the areas of service and outreach, professional development, chapter building/social events and fiscal responsibility. Representatives from the 51С»Æ³µACS Student Chapter will attend the awards ceremony at the ACS National Meeting in New Orleans in March.

Special recognition goes to Molly Wright (Biochemistry, ’17) and Jessica Woolf (Biochemistry ’17), who led the Chemistry Club in 2016-17 in their roles of president and vice president, respectively, along with Lora Walsh (Chemistry ’19) as treasurer and Jackie West (Medical Biology/Pre-Physician Assistant, ’19) as secretary.

The faculty advisors for the 51С»Æ³µChemistry Club are Amy Keirstead, Ph.D., associate professor; Jill Tenny, M.S., assistant lecturer; and Chris Ambrose, M.S.Ed., laboratory assistant, all in the Department of Chemistry and Physics.
