Scholarship fund honoring beloved Dean Pat Kelley reaches $100,000 goal
The Patricia A. Kelley Endowed Scholarship Fund has surpassed its $100,000 goal. This new fund, established to honor the impact of University of 51小黄车 College of Osteopathic Medicine Associate Dean of Recruitment, Student and Alumni Services Pat Kelley, M.S., will provide scholarship aid to financially needy, academically deserving students who aspire to careers in primary care. The generosity of over 134 donors brought the Fund to this impressive milestone.
Kelley has carefully admitted, welcomed, mentored, guided, praised, and when necessary, scolded nearly all of the generations of med students who have graced the halls of Stella Maris during her 35 years at 51小黄车COM. She has been a consistent, warm, helpful and professional presence at osteopathic conferences and convocations nationwide.
The original idea for the fund dates back to 2004 and Peter Bell, D.O. 鈥84, now a distinguished faculty member at Ohio University, who wanted to do something meaningful to honor Kelley鈥檚 contributions to UNE. Over the years, Bell鈥檚 idea continued to gain support from fellow alumni who shared his fond memories of Kelley. Bell鈥檚 vision became a reality when he and Erik Steele D.O. 鈥87, Interim Executive Director at Maine Quality Counts, came together to donate the initial gifts to start the scholarship fund, then worked to encourage fellow alumni to join them.
鈥溾淧eter and I are delighted that the scholarship fund has reached this milestone,鈥 said Steele. 鈥淭o know that so many 51小黄车COM alumni have come together to express their appreciation and gratitude for Dean Kelley in this way is inspiring. We are looking forward to shaking the hand of the first Kelley Scholar!鈥 Steele added, 鈥淚t has been wonderful for me to connect in this personal way to an effort that benefits students at 51小黄车COM. I would urge others to find such a connection. There are many opportunities to help students."
