The Journal Tribune published an article by Paul Visich, Ph.D., M.P.H., ACSMC-CEP, professor and chair in the Department of Exercise and Sport Performance, on August 27, as part of its Health & Wellness series.

The article, 鈥淭he Importance of Exercise and How it can Affect your Cholesterol Levels,鈥 discusses the many factors that contribute to one鈥檚 cholesterol level, including genetics, weight, age and diet. Visich explains that recent studies show that exercise alone, even without accompanying weight loss, can have a beneficial effect on cholesterol levels, though benefits are compounded when exercise leads to weight loss.

He outlines the volume and intensity of exercise required to favorably influence levels of LDL-C, the 鈥渂ad鈥 cholesterol that can lead to arterial disease, as well as those required to result in weight loss.

Other tips on improving cholesterol levels that Visich offers in the article are to quit smoking and to eat a diet low in saturated fat.
