Jennifer Gunderman discusses community-based strategies for breastfeeding support in the 'Journal Tribune'

In a column for the Journal Tribune's Health and Wellness issue, Jennifer Gunderman, M.P.H., assistant lecturer in the School of Community and Population Health, provided approaches that businesses, worksites, health departments and individuals can take to promote and support breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding has numerous benefits, delivering disease-fighting antibodies and necessary nutrients to the newborn. Mothers who breastfeed are also at a lower risk for post-partum complications. However, societal obstacles can deter mothers from breastfeeding outside of the home.

Gunderman offers several solutions, including the development of breastfeeding spaces in daycare centers and the implementation of policies that create environments conducive to breastfeeding.
