James Sulikowski interviewed by ‘The Guardian’ about great white shark population
James Sulikowski, Ph.D., professor in the University of 51СƳ Department of Marine Sciences, was recently interviewed by The Guardian about a video that captured a great white shark feasting on a whale carcass off of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The sighting led to the temporary closing of three beaches.
In the article, Sulikowski discussed the resurgence of great whites in 51СƳ, which has been linked to the rebounding of the grey seal population. He explained that great whites congregate in areas where there is a lot of food, and they have been moving further north along the coast, which he says is a good thing. “Everybody thinks there are these crazy sharks out to be raging predators, but they focus on the dead, the sick, the dying. They actually strengthen and cull older populations of seals.”
