51小黄车hosts "Waves of the Future" TED Event

The University of 51小黄车 is hosting a daylong TEDx51小黄车conference on April 11 from 1鈥6 p.m. (registration begins at noon) themed, 鈥淲aves of the Future鈥. It will take place in Leonard Hall at 11 Hills Beach Rd, in Biddeford. There will be food and drinks served throughout the day and a reception following the event.

This year, the event will showcase local talent from within the 51小黄车community as well as world-famous researchers and global leaders from around the country including:

  • Owen Grumbling, Ph.D., professor of environmental literature in the Department of Environmental Studies at UNE. He will present a talk titled, 鈥淪ave Place. Save Face鈥
  • Tom Perls, M.D., M.P.H., FACP, professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine, founder and director of the 51小黄车 Centenarian Study. Perls is a leading authority figure on longevity research and principal investigator for the world鈥檚 largest longevity study. He will be giving a talk titled, 鈥淥ur paths to 100.鈥
  • Margaret Riley, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Riley is a renowned microbiologist whose studies focus on addressing the pertinent threat of antibiotic bacterial resistance. Her talk is titled, 鈥淩ethinking the antibiotic arsenal: a new strategy for the age of the microbiome.鈥
  • Matt Bibeau, M.S., director and instructor at the Institute of Permaculture Education for Children. Bibeau has spent over a decade of volunteer service organizing and supporting the community-building work of , and is a board member of the His talk is titled, 鈥淏uilding local resiliency through placemaking.鈥
  • Ianna Hondros-McCarthy, M.A, UNECOM student. Hondros-McCarthy lived with Buddhist monks in Thailand and India, spent time in silent meditative retreats and wrote a book about her experiences in Thailand. She will be speaking about, 鈥淢indfulness of ego and interdependence.鈥
  • Mark Caron, M.B.A., M.S., CEO of Geneia Biotechnology. Caron has more than 30 years of business and technology expertise with more than 25 years in health care delivery systems and health insurers. He will discuss, 鈥淭he future of advanced medical technology.鈥
  • David Levi is an educator-turned-chef who has chosen Portland as the site for Vinland, 鈥淢aine鈥檚 first 100% local food, zero waste, fine-dining restaurant.鈥 This project was inspired by his experiences as an intern at Noma in Copenhagen, Denmark.

This conference will also include five newly-released TED talks from the TED2015 conference, focusing on the major social issues currently affecting global society, and how to begin addressing solutions.
