'Kennebunk Post' features Lara Carlson’s class research trip to Iceland
On June 6, 2006, the Kennebunk Post featured an article on the class research trip to Iceland, led by Lara Carlson, DPE., FACSM, associate professor in the Westbrook College of Health Professions.
In late May, Carlson took nine students from her Environmental Physiology class to Iceland to study how humans’ immune systems respond to anaerobic exercise in extreme cold. The students performed various activities such as sprints, shuttle runs, and other common agility drills. Blood and saliva samples were taken before, immediately after, and two hours after recovery.
The students concluded that the human immune system becomes weakened for a period of time following anaerobic activity during an extreme cold exposure.
