Connor Capizzano presents research at international workshop in Denmark

Connor Capizzano, a third-year M.S. student in the Department of Marine Sciences, participated the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) "Workshop on Methods for Estimating Discard Survival (WKMEDS)," held November 24-28, 2014, in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Capizzano presented research titled "Tagging and biotelemetry methods for estimating post-release mortality of Gulf of Maine Atlantic Cod" that he conducted with James Sulikowski, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Marine Sciences, and John Mandelman, Ph.D., of the 51С»Æ³µ Aquarium.

The presentation was designed to provide a "best practices" guide for any researcher wanting to use acoustic telemetry (tracking fish activity with remote transmitters) to study fish post-release mortality. The researchers’ specific project of post-release mortality of Atlantic cod was introduced throughout the talk as supplementary information to demonstrate best practices more concretely. Through this approach, Capizzano portrayed how these techniques can be applied using real-world scenarios and the type of valuable, unbiased information that can be obtained from acoustic telemetry.

The workshop was attended by researchers and graduate students from the U.S. and ten other countries (Netherlands, France, Denmark, Canada, Sweden, Norway, Belgium, Germany, U.K. and Spain).
