David Smith discusses his research genocide at a think tank on ethnic cleansing in Sudan
On Nov. 25, 2011, Associate Professor of Philosophy David Livingstone Smith, Ph.D., attended the inaugural meeting of a think tank devoted to raising awareness about, and influencing US policy with respect to the ethnic cleansing of the marginalized people of Sudan by the government of Omar al-Bashir. The meeting, which was held at the Desmond Tutu Center in Manhattan, was sponsored by The Most Dangerous Animal, an organization inspired by Smith's 2007 book of the same name.
Participants included Minni Minawi (leader of the Sudanese Liberation Army), Simon Deng (emancipated Sudanese slave and human rights activist), human rights activist Andrew Eiva, Eugenie Mukeshimana (founder and executive director of the Genocide Survivors' Support network), and Mohammed Yahya (executive director of the Damanga Coalition for Freedom and Democracy), among others. Smith gave a presentation on his recent research into the role of dehumanization in genocide.
