Charles Tilburg interviewed for WGME TV story on rip currents
WGME 13 TV news interviewed Charles Tilburg, Ph.D., assistant professor of marine science, for an Aug. 17, 2011 story about rip currents.
Tilburg said that the danger with rip currents is that they will pull a swimmer away from the beach, and a swimmer might panic not knowing what to do and try to swim against it the current, get tired and drown. Others interviewed said swimmers shouldn't swim towards the shore, rather parallel to the shore in either direction. That will quickly get you out of the rip current and allow you to swim back to shore. .
