A poster presented by 51小黄车College of Osteopathic Medicine professors Kathryn Thompson, Ph.D., Renee LeClair, Ph.D., Barbara Winterson, Ph.D. and David Manyan, Ph.D. at the International Association of Medical Science Educators 14th Annual Association meeting, July 10-13, received the outstanding presentation award at the meeting.

The poster entitled 鈥淐oncept Mapping as a Team-based Learning Application Exercise in a First Year Medical Biochemistry Course鈥 compared the performance of students during 2008-2009 to the performance of students in 2009-2010 after the introduction of concept mapping as a key component of the course.

The authors were able to show that the students in the class who completed concept maps performed better on multiple choice questions and reported spending more time preparing for class, greater gains of factual knowledge and a greater awareness of the connections between biochemistry and medicine.

Drs. Thompson, LeClair and Manyan are members of the College of Osteopathic Medicine Division of Biochemistry and Nutrition and Dr. Winterson is a member of the Division of Physiology in the Biomedical Sciences Department.

The International Association of Medical Science Educators was founded in 1997 to advance medical education through faculty development and to ensure that the teaching and learning of medicine continues to be firmly grounded in science.
