Marilyn Gugliucci is lead presenter for AGHE Presidential Symposium
Dr. Marilyn R. Gugliucci, Ph.D., President of the Association for Gerontology/Geriatrics in Higher Education (AGHE) and Co-chair for the AGHE Health Professions Geriatrics Curriculum Task Force was the convener and lead presenter for the AGHE Presidential Symposium at the Gerontological Society of America Annual Scientific Meeting in Atlanta GA, on November 21, 2009. The session was entitled: Preparing a Health Care Workforce for an Aging America: Challenges and Collaborative Solutions. The faculty panel included Barbara Resnick, Ph.D., CRNP, FAAN, FAANP, Eldercare Workforce Alliance representative who spoke on "The Eldercare Workforce Alliance and its Approach to Addressing Issues and Challenges of Meeting the Health Workforce Needs"; Nancy Hooyman, MSW, Ph.D. ,Council on Social Work Education representative who spoke on "Enhancing the Geriatrics Competence of the Health Professions Workforce Through the Example of Social Work"; Elyse A. Perweiler, MPP, RN, UMDNJ-SOM faculty and AGHE Geriatrics Curriculum Task Force Representative who spoke on "Interdisciplinary Approach to identifying Competencies in Geriatrics/Gerontology for Health Professions Education"; and Nancy Richeson, PhD, CTRS , American Therapeutic Recreation Association representative and Co-chair of the AGHE Geriatrics Curriculum Task Force who spoke on "The AGHE Task Force Approach to Constructing Geriatrics/Gerontology Curricula Guidelines for Health Professions Programs."
The panel discussion illuminated the issues and challenges of meeting the health workforce needs of our changing demographics and described a collaborative effort to enhance the preparation of students and professionals in health care. AGHE is completing a project developing geriatrics curriculum guidelines for health professions academic programs that will be published in 2010.
