Biology researcher Geoffrey Ganter has been awarded $222,798 grant to study steroid hormones in the nervous system

University of 51小黄车 College of Arts and Sciences associate professor of Biological Sciences, Geoffrey Ganter, Ph.D., was recently awarded a $222,798 grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) to support his research on how steroid hormones regulate behavior.  Ganter's work using the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster investigates how the body's natural steroid hormones are used to control such processes as sexual behavior.

Ganter's grant is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.  These stimulus funds will be used to create new jobs in Maine by allowing the hiring of an additional scientist to assist with the neuroscience research, and additional teaching staff to support UNE's educational mission.

Dr. Ganter is a member of the Center of Excellence in the Neurosciences and was part of a 10 million dollar COBRE application that was submitted by Dr. Ian Meng this past summer.
