Thermal regulation of glutamate signaling in the trigeminal nucleus caudalis
Dr. Tally Largent-Milnes is a postdoctoral fellow funded by the NIDCR/NIH. She received both her B.S. (Biochemistry & Molecular Biophysics/Molecular & Cellular Biology) in 2005 and her Ph.D. (Pharmacology) in 2010 from the University of Arizona.
The scope of Dr. Largent-Milnes?research encompasses the mechanisms by which temperature drives synaptic signaling in the trigeminal dorsal horn. By combining in vitro electrophysiological and immunocytochemical techniques, studies relate temperature-evoked glutamate release from the central terminals of trigeminal afferent neurons to signal propagation in identified circuits. Emphasis is placed on physiologically relevant temperatures acting at these central terminals to delineate what occurs in a non-injured state. These studies will allow for investigation of abnormal synaptic physiology driving the transition from acute to chronic pain. These findings may be applied to the development of novel analgesic compounds that combat synaptic plasticity underlying the development of chronic pain or the adverse events associated with sustained analgesic therapy.
